Early Life
Brittney Griner was born on October 18, 1990, in Houston, Texas, the United States to parents Raymond Griner and Sandra Griner. Her father was a Harris County sheriff and Marine veteran in Vietnam.
She studied at Nimitz High School and played varsity volleyball as a freshman. She participated in the 2009 WBCA High School All-America Game and led the team scoring 20 points.
Career
Brittney Griner played college basketball for the Baylor Bears women’s basketball which represents Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
She was named the nation’s No.1 high school women’s basketball player in 2009 by Rivals.com. In 2012 she was awarded the Best Female Athlete ESPY Award.
In 2016, Brittney Griner was selected for the United States women’s Olympic team and led the team to win the Rio Olympics. In 2021, she won the second Olympic gold medal in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Personal Life
Brittney Griner is a lesbian. She got engaged with WNBA player Glory Johnson on August 14, 2014, and they were arrested on charges of assault. They got married on May 8, 2015, in Phoenix. On October 12, 2015, Johnson gave birth to twin girls. The couple got divorced in June 2016.
Then she started dating Cherelle Watson in August 2018 and married in June 2019. Following the marriage, Watson changed her name to Cherelle Griner.
In February 2022, she was arrested by Russian customs at Sheremetyevo International Airport for carrying hashish oil, an oleoresin obtained by the extraction of cannabis. Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison on August 4, 2022.
