Valery Gerasimov is a popular Russian army general and the Chief of the General Staff, the highest-ranking officer of the Russian Armed Forces. He is also the Deputy Minister of Defence. However, he comes to international news headlines when his name was declared as the commander of Russia’s war in Ukraine replacing Sergey Surovikin.
Valery Gerasimov was born on September 8, 1955, in Kazan, Russia. He received a bachelor’s degree from the Kazan Suvorov Military School in 1973. Then he studied at Kazan Higher Tank Command School and the Malinovsky Military Armored Forces Academy. Finally, he ended his academic journey by joining the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia.
Valery Gerasimov has been serving as the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation since 2012. Prior to that, he held various command and staff positions in the Russian military, including as the Deputy Chief of the General Staff and as commander of the Russian Ground Forces.
Gerasimov is considered to be a key figure in the development of Russia’s military strategy and has been involved in many of the country’s military operations, including the conflicts in Chechnya and Ukraine. He is also known for his “Gerasimov Doctrine” which emphasizes the use of non-military means, such as propaganda and cyber warfare, to achieve military objectives.
