Mary Peltola is a popular American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Alaska since 2022. She served as a judge on the Orutsararmiut Native Council’s tribal court from 2020 to 2021.
Peltola defeated former governor Sarah Palin in the special election in August 2022. She is the first Alaska Native member of Congress and the first woman to represent the house.
Mary Peltola was born on August 31, 1973, in Anchorage, Alaska, United States to parents Ward Sattler and Elizabeth “LizAnn” Piicigaq Williams. Her father Ward Sattler was a pilot and teacher. She studied at the University of Northern Colorado from 991 to 1994. Then she attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the University of Alaska Southeast, and the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Mary Peltola started her career journey working as a campaign manager for Independent candidate Willie Kasayulie in the general election. In 1998, she grabbed the huge attention of the media when she was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives.
She won the Miss National Congress of American Indians pageant in 1995.
Mary Peltola married Gene Peltola, the director of the Alaska Regional Office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She resides in Bethel, Alaska with her husband. She has four children and three stepchildren. Previously she married Jonathan Kapsner and Joe Nelson.
